The National Lumber Grades Authority (NLGA) was incorporated under Letters Patent by the Minister of Corporate and Consumer Affairs on January 12, 1971, as the organization responsible for writing, interpreting and maintaining Canadian lumber grading rules and standards.

The NLGA rule is approved and enforced by the Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board (CLSAB) and by the American Lumber Standard (ALS) Board of Review. The approval enables acceptance under Canadian and US building codes.

The National Grading Rule for all North American dimension lumber 2" to 4" thick, as developed by the National Grading Rule establishes standard lumber grades and grade names, assuring users of uniform design and performance for all commercial species of dimensions lumber.

The membership of NLGA consists of all the lumber manufacturers' associations and independent grading agencies in Canada that have been accredited by the CLSAB as well as the ALS.
